5 of 5 A Treasure To Children With Autism March 18, 2021
Reviewer: Jandy R., Early Childhood Educator
If you don’t already know, children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggle with figurative language. Idioms, hyperboles, and metaphors are harder to comprehend even more than irony and sarcasm. The social use of language is already very challenging for them, so imagine adding to that, sentences and expressions that don’t match the literal meaning.

This is why parents and teachers need to highly consider teaching figurative language at an early age  in order to support the understanding of an everyday social conversation, which will result in an increase of participation in social situations as well as lower anxiety.

As a former Special Education teacher, I know there are not too many resources that target this subject out there, and this is why I am so glad I came across this series of books from www.languagelizard.com, that specifically focuses on teaching idioms. These books seem to be perfectly designed to the way that ASD brain learns, it provides detailed examples of the idioms, along with the definition and a visual representation.

Language Lizard Idiom books are a golden package. It is very rare to find children's literature that is designed to help children with Special Needs and even harder to find resources that target both, Special Needs and English language learners. This is why this set of books are a treasure and a must have in every parent, and educator’s bookshelf.

5 of 5 Very Impressed with Idiom Book Set December 7, 2020
Reviewer: Jane C., BCBA, M.Ed from Special Education Teacher
I was very impressed with this whole series of idiom books.  I like that each book has it's own theme and each page has such colorful, interesting pictures.   I also personally liked the diversity of cultures depicted within the pictures. I work with kids on the spectrum who don't necessarily intuitively know expressions and idioms.  Since people with autism are often visual learners, the pictures were very helpful to them to understand the meaning.  The definitions and examples were also very straightforward and used simple enough language, that they could understand what the idiom meant and how it was used.   They were excited to learn each idiom and see what the next idiom was.  I would highly recommend this whole series for anyone working with the types of learners that I work with.

5 of 5 Love the multicultural illustrations! December 1, 2020
Reviewer: Chris V from South Orange, NJ
This set is so helpful for my ESL students! We are studying figurative language with the class so I got a set in Spanish and in Chinese along with an English set. It's been really helpful. And since the kids are hybrid, I've let them take the books home to teach some idioms to their parents on their "at home" days. Plus they explored idioms in their home languages and shared them with the class. I adapted the lesson plan that was offered with the book to suit my students. Great resource!
