Article: The Multicultural Library: How librarians are responding to the needs of ethnically diverse communities
BENEFITS FOR LIBRARIANS
Provide your patrons with high-quality books
in up to 40 languages!
We can help you meet the needs of your ethnically
diverse patrons with high quality dual-language books.
There is a huge and growing population of foreign-born and first-generation
Americans. According to the Census Bureau, 47 million people
spoke a foreign language at home in the year 2000. And
many of these are young people. In fact, currently about 20%
of births are to a foreign mother (up from just 6% in
1970). While Latin and South America account for the majority of
the immigrant population, over 40% are from Asia and Europe and
there are a growing number of immigrants from Africa.
The materials available in our libraries should reflect this
diversity in our community.
Our dual-language books are offered in English and up to 40 languages.
Introduce well-reviewed multicultural stories to your
collection!
Our products have been consistently well reviewed and
have won awards for both the stories and illustrations (click here
to see sample reviews). Many of
the stories teach children about traditions in other cultures or
tell fables and folk stories from other nationalities. In addition,
all the dual-language products...
- Have appealing, multi-ethnic characters
- Are creative, clever and enjoyable
- Develop tolerance, respect for others, and self esteem
- Have strong, community settings
- Are professionally translated in up to 40 languages
- Are popular in thousands of schools and libraries throughout
Europe and North America
Most importantly, kids love these stories and
will read them over and over!
Get more for your money with dual-language books and CDs!
Who reads dual-language books? Anyone can! All of our
dual-language books are written in English and a foreign language,
with over 40 languages represented.
The options for your patrons are greater with a dual-language
text than with a single-language text. The stories and illustrations
are so fantastic that readers may choose to use them for multiple
purposes.
- Some patrons will read the stories only in English.
The creative and enjoyable stories certainly rival the best English-only
children's books available.
- English-speaking families can use them to introduce
their kids to a foreign language.
- Non-English speaking parents can use them to help
their children maintain a native language.
- Foreign-born parents and grandparents
can also use the books as a means to preserve their heritage
and to "connect" with
their children.
School librarians will find that foreign language
and diversity teachers, as well as teachers of English as a Second
Language, use them as excellent supplementary teaching materials.
CDs of many of the stories are available in numerous languages,
so the books can be enjoyed and used as a teaching resource even
if the reader (or parent) does not speak the foreign language.
With the CDs, children can also gain an exposure to less commonly
taught languages and cultures, developing an interest in future
language study.
Help develop children who understand and are tolerant
of other cultures!
It is our responsibility to raise culturally aware children who
can bring our communities closer together. These dual-language
products, with multi-ethnic characters and themes, teach a tolerance
and respect for others. They also provide a fun way to help kids
learn about other cultures and traditions.
Offer unique story-time activities and presentations to
inspire kids!
These books offer a great way to bring unique multicultural stories
and themes to your story-time activities.
